McAfee Internet Security

Barricade your computer against viruses, spyware and other cyber threats with Internet Security software by McAfee. McAfee has developed a technologically advanced line of defense that is relatively easy to use.

This software suite has proven itself time and time again against some of the most rigorous tests, including ICSA, West Coasts Labs Levels 1 & 2 and Virus Bulletin 100%. Each of these tests came to the same conclusion—McAfee Internet Security Suite will protect your computer and your personal information from the dangers that lurk on the web.

Firewall:

The McAfee firewall will keep intruders out and your personal information safe. It monitors your computer’s ports and all data that enters or leaves. With one click, you can lock down the firewall, which blocks all network traffic between your computer and the Internet. It also stops remote connections from accessing your computer.

Setting up custom firewall rules and changing the firewall configuration was difficult. We also had issues with the firewall not opening ports that we had specified within the custom rules.

Antivirus:

McAfee is one of the few companies that submitted their software to all three major testing labs, ICSA, Virus Bulletin (VB) and West Coast Labs (W.C.L.), and passed all three tests. The suite offers a variety of virus scanning options. You can scan files on demand, real-time or schedule your system scans.

McAfee’s website provides current information on potentially harmful viruses and virus hoaxes to keep you safe and informed.

Antispyware:

The ISCA also gave their approval for the antispyware function of the McAfee Internet Security Suite. This software will detect spyware of all kinds including adware, keyloggers, trojans, browser hijackers and more. The scanner did miss many tracking cookies as well as some pre-installed spyware toolbars.

Other Security/Features:

In addition to the main security functions listed above, McAfee further protects your computer and personal information by scanning emails and instant message attachments. The software will detect problems, filter spam and notify you of potential phishing schemes. Phishing is creating a fraudulent email or website that appears to be a legitimate company, like a bank, credit card company or government agency. The goal is to collect personal information.

McAfee also has extensive parental control features that will filter web content by keyword, by using a blacklist or by image analysis. You are able to set up an account and customize web filters for each user.

We used the “Maintain Computer” function to clean out old and unused files. You can shred the files for privacy purposes if you want. From this screen, you can also reconfigure your PC for optimum performance.

Ease of Use:

McAfee’s main user interface is well organized so you can quickly access and configure the firewall, antivirus and parental controls. You can also access reports and logs so you can see exactly what functions have taken place and what the results are.

A large problem with McAfee's security suite is that it slowed down our testing system considerably while it was installed. At times we were able to type faster than Word could display the letters on screen because of the slowdown.

Ease of Installation/Setup:

We didn’t have any problems while installing this software. The initial setup is simple and the software has default settings so you don’t have to do any extensive configuring. McAfee integrates well with other programs like Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook.

Uninstalling the Mcafee Internet Security seemed to go well until we searched for things that it might have left behind. Many registry keys as well as several directories were still present after a forced reboot.

Help/Support:

McAfee provides tutorials, a user manual and FAQs. You can also contact customer support by phone, online chat and email.

Summary:

McAfee Internet Security Suite provides the security you need to safely navigate the web. It is a little bit anemic in some areas, and has the potential to slow your computer down while the real time scanner is functioning. We would suggest looking at some of our higher ranked products for an Internet security suite.

Trend Micro AntiVirus

Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware is a full-featured and well-equipped program that is geared towards keeping your computer free of viruses and spyware. It is easy to configure for nearly any antivirus need. It causes significant computer slowdowns occasionally, but makes up for these issues with thorough scanning and frequent updates.

Ease of Use:

Trend Micro Antivirus plus AntiSpyware is extremely easy to use. Nearly all of the configuration options are set after the install is finished. Scanning and updating are as easy as clicking a button on the overview page within the program. Changing settings and configuring advanced settings is easy and each of the settings is clearly explained within the program.

Effectiveness:

Trend Micro has a history of producing effective products that have been used in homes and enterprises for years. The included virus scanner is well-equipped and has a high success rate on par with many other high end antivirus programs.

Despite its high marks in scanning, Trend Micro Antivirus is slow when scanning and can cause problems with freezing and slowdowns. It also has a tendency to not play nice with Firefox and MSN Live Messenger.

Updates:

Updates can be done automatically or manually depending on your needs. Automatic updates default to being done every 3 hours. They are done in the background by default as well. The only time you will be notified of an update is if it requires a reboot for some reason. Take note that updates can take quite some time to complete depending on the size of the update.

Feature Set:

Trend Micro Antivirus plus AntiSpyware includes the antivirus scanner as well as the antispyware scanner noted in its name. It also includes a utility to track unauthorized changes to your operating system or system files.

Ease of Installation:

Installing Trend Micro Antivirus plus AntiSpyware is as simple as reading a couple screens and hitting the next button a few times. The only problem we experienced was the initial update that the program gets after installation is finished. That update took nearly 30 minutes and required a reboot.

Help/Support:

Trend Micro has always been big on customer support. In this tradition, they offer several support options. The most impressive is their guided knowledge base. This is the first knowledge base (KB) that has actually been useful in finding solutions to problems. If you are not able to get help for your issue through the KB, they also offer ticket-based-support as well as live chat and phone support. The phone support option is available at appropriate times in the USA, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

Summary:

Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware is a solid solution for those that are looking for an antivirus program that is easy to configure and doesn't require much user interaction. It has a simple interface and some of the best customer support available in the antivirus market. The only thing that keeps Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware from being a top 3 product is the severe slowdowns that can occur while performing seemingly unrelated tasks.

F-Secure Anti-Virus

F-Secure Anti-Virus is a great product that offers many of the standard functions associated with antivirus software, but also goes above and beyond the bar set by others with efforts by F-Secure to educate the people that use F-Secure Anti-Virus on general security practices as well as specific threats.

Ease of Use:

F-Secure Anti-Virus is very easy to use and comes preconfigured with the most effective options for your computers' security. The menus within F-Secure Anti-Virus are simple and quick to display the options under each menu.

Effectiveness:

F-Secure Anti-Virus is one of the most effective antivirus programs on the market. Its heuristic scanner is considered by many to be one of the fastest and most complete on the market.

We did have some problems with its on-access scanner though. The test system we used is a pretty fast system. Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz with 1GB of RAM. The on-access scanner would sometimes bring this system to a halt when opening programs or moving files.

Updates:

F-Secure Anti-Virus checks for updates every two hours. This is fine for most people and shouldn't cause any problems. One issue that we did notice is that one of the updates that was receive required a reboot of the test system. While we had a choice in the reboot, it was odd that it should require a reboot to apply new virus signatures or even minor program updates.

Feature Set:

F-Secure Anti-Virus comes with the standard protection you would expect from any modern antivirus suite. Both on-access and on-demand scanners are included as well as a spyware scanner that runs with both. An email scanner is also included for those of us using local email clients like Outlook or Thunderbird.

One feature we especially liked about F-Secure Anti-Virus was the integrated news on the home menu. The Security News section is full of useful information about which new security threats are out and whether you are protected from each threat.

Ease of Installation:

Installation of F-Secure Anti-Virus is fast and easy. It took less than 5 minutes to initially install, but required a very long update upon completion of the install. The install itself required a single reboot as well as the update that was download after the install finished.

Help/Support:

F-Secure offers several options for support. They have a "How to" section with several FAQ's included as well as offering a product manual from within the program itself. Also available are phone support and email support. You may find that support for F-Secure Anti-Virus is difficult to obtain once you get past the self-help options. The site is somewhat convoluted and could use a redesign to make it easier and faster to use. To be fair, most people will not need to contact customer support directly if they use the self help options that are available on the support site.

Summary:

With one of the most thorough antivirus engines available, F-Secure Anti-Virus provides good protection against viruses, spyware and many other security threats. The added benefit of the support and education portion of their website adds to the overall feeling of protection while using this product. While it isn't perfect, and does have issues with significant slowdowns while the on-access scanner is working, the overall product is effective.

AVG Anti-Virus

AVG Antivirus has been an up and coming virus scanner for many years. Its free version is one of the most downloaded files on the Internet in the Computer Security sector. The new interface is clean and intuitive while still remaining useful.

AVG went through a re-write of their virus scanning engine and included two of their stand alone products with AVG Antivirus as well. AVG Antispyware and AVG Antirootkit were both integrated with the virus scanner. Also revamped is the way AVG Antivirus uses the hardware within your computer. It has been changed to make better use of the multiple cores which are common in todays computers. This should speed up scanning as well as reduce slowdowns.

Ease of Use:

Though AVG Antivirus is mostly a hands-off program, there may be some instances when you may need to configure some advanced options. For 99% of the population though, the default options will be more than sufficient.

The menus within AVG Antivirus are very simple and offer all the options and information needed to keep your system safe from Internet threats.

Effectiveness:

AVG Antivirus is one of the most complete programs we have found to date. It includes many new options to make it one of the most effective virus scanners on the market. It is still plagued by horrible slowdowns at times. Even things so simple as just typing an IM can be stopped for several seconds for some reason. If you can get passed the occasional slowdowns of your computer, the scanning functionality of AVG Antivirus 8 is top of the line. With the rewrite of the scanning engine, AVG includes multi-processor support. That dual core processor you bought is actually going to start getting a workout now. AVG also includes support for Windows Vista and the 64 bit versions of Windows XP and Vista.

Updates:

AVG Checks for updates every 4 hours by default. You can change this to any interval you wish. The updates section of AVG Antivirus also shows you which virus database version you have, as well as when the last update was. It also tells you when the next update is scheduled. All of this information is also displayed on the main menu screen so that you always have the information at your fingertips.

Feature Set:

AVG Technologies, formerly Grisoft, has gone above and beyond with the new release of AVG Antivirus. Included with the virus scanner, are a rootkit scanner, spyware scanner, an on-access scanner called Resident Shield, email scanner and a link scanning browser plug-in. There is also a portion of AVG Antivirus called Web Shield. Web Shield is a chopped down firewall application that scans standard web ports for any threats encountered while browsing the web. It also includes protection for MSN Messenger and ICQ.

Ease of Installation:

Installing AVG Antivirus 8 was easy and only took about 10 minutes including downloading the additional updates required after installation finished. We had no issues or errors during the install.

Help/Support:

With the name change from Grisoft to AVG Technologies, the support site was updated and saw many improvements over the old design. Support offerings included with AVG Antivirus 8 are a FAQs, email support, phone-based technical support, as well as an inclusive support section within the program itself.

Summary:

Version 8 of AVG Antivirus is a definite improvement over version 7.5. The scanning features have been sped up and the new interface is a clean and modern take on a time-tested product.

Including a link scanner and integrating AVG Antispyware and AVG AntiRootkit provides an even more effective product. An unfortunate problem that has plagued AVG products for quite some time has not been eliminated, even though AVG did a complete rewrite of the virus scanning engine. The on-access scanner still tends to slow down computers to the point where they are not usable at times. This isn't a constant factor and has been improved significantly, but you will notice it when it happens. Beyond the slowdown issue, AVG Antivirus 8 is a complete product that will help keep your computer clean and safe.

eConceal Pro 2.0

eConceal Firewall Pro is an advanced and well rounded firewall solution for the home and home office. It includes many features from standard options such as Stealth Mode all the way to real-time bandwidth reporting. It also reports all the active connections coming to and leaving your computer. As many firewall products are beginning to do, eConceal Firewall Pro allows you to perform rule changes at the application level as well as the port level.

The management panel is one place where we found that eConceal Firewall Pro falls behind the pack. While it is very clean and easy to use, some of the options you would expect are not there. This does not take away from the overall greatness that eConceal Firewall Pro presents though, and may actually make the product more appealing to the average user. After all, less is more sometimes.

Feature Set:

eConceal Firewall Pro offers a plethora of standard features commonly seen in firewall software. However, it does lack some of the extras including virus scanner integration and spyware scanner integration. Overall though, this is a very traditional and powerful firewall program. The features you can expect are things such as Stealth Mode, Port Monitoring, some very powerful log options, and Data/Packet Filtering. It also has a predefined rules database that is quite nice and very usable for the home user, and in many cases, a small office as well.

You will notice immediately that eConceal Firewall Pro doesn’t offer some of the features that have become common place in the market.. Things such as spyware scanning and virus scanner integration are not available. While these would be nice to have, they are not crucial in a standalone firewall product.

eConceal Firewall Pro does have a couple extra features such as popup blocking, webpage scanning and password protection that help to redeem it.

The webpage scanning feature is especially useful feature in the realm of parental control. It will scan a page for any pornographic or offensive materials and block the site if it passes a certain threshold. It worked well for us, but missed on some of the flash based sites that we used to test. If parents notice some of these sites slipping through the system eConceal allows you to add those sites manually within the WebScan Administrator.

The popup blocker was perfect in all the tests we threw at it. It is smart enough to decide which popup windows are good and which are bad. All in all, it was impressive.

Ease of Use:

The popup blocker was perfect in all the tests we threw at it. It is smart enough to decide which popup windows are good and which are bad. All in all, it was impressive.

Ease of Installation:

The installation of eConceal Firewall Pro was fast and simple. It seemed lean and mean from the beginning and did not disappoint during the install phase. Installation took less than one minute and only required one reboot.

Reliability:

eConceal Firewall Pro is very reliable. It blocked every attack we threw at it while still allowing us to use my computer effectively. The popup blocker was also very effective. In fact, it was perfect.

The WebScan feature was a little less powerful, but still worked to a large degree. It missed some sites that were based on Flash technology, but caught all but one of the non-flash sites.

It was also effective in blocking most of the searches we tried on Google that had to do with pornography and other offensive subjects.

Help/Support:

Support options for the product are pretty standard. Online chat using either Yahoo! Messenger or MSN Messenger is available as well as a stocked knowledgebase and phone support. They also have an email support option.

One thing we did notice is that the help option in the program refused to open. However, the online help was more than enough to offset this small issue.

Summary:

eConceal Firewall Pro is a great product. The lean machine style that just screams from this product is a great relief in a sector so filled with fluff. While it may not have some of the additional options that come with some of the better known names, it does protect you just as well as any of the others on the market. Where it lacks in extra features such as spyware scanning and virus scanner integration, it is very strong in its simplicity. The predetermined rules that it comes with are better than many others we have seen.We especially liked the parental control features. They were successful in blocking most offensive sites we tried to access while they were in effect.

Overall, eConceal Firewall Pro is a great product that will keep your computer and your family safe from all the bad and offensive things out there on the net.

BullGuard Internet Security 8

The latest offering from Bullguard is Bullguard Internet Security 8. This recent update to the Bullguard suite of products brings us one of the most complete and advanced security suites available today.

A fast virus scanner that includes advanced spyware detection, along with a full featured mail scanner bring Bullguard Internet Security 8 to the forefront of Internet security. The firewall that is included is easy to use and very functional with the added benefit of being easy to configure.

Firewall:

Bullguard Internet Security's firewall is effective and easy to use for the most part. It has two modes that have several options within them.

In beginner mode, you have the ability to change how some programs are handled within the firewall, but are not able to limit specific ports. This is not an issue as the firewall should detect and assign the correct ports based on the program you are using.

Within advanced mode, you have three different profiles to choose from. High Security -- blocks all program access to the net. Low Security -- like not having much of a firewall at all. Custom Security -- can be set to any level you wish. Within these profiles, you have several logging options, as well as the ability to set up advanced rules.

The firewall in basic mode caught everything we threw at it. It warned us of port scans and blocked them. It also quietly blocked other intrusion attempts without popping up an annoying warning every time.

Antivirus:

Bullguard's antivirus scanner is among the top in the market. It has a fast on demand scanner and doesn't slow down your system noticeably while using the on access scanner.

Antispyware:

The antispyware features included with Bullguard Internet Security were effective and thorough. It caught all of the spyware and tool bars we had installed on our test system as well as removing any cookies left by Internet Explorer.

Other Security/Features:

Bullguard comes with a spread of extra features including a great backup utility and a spam filter that integrates with all the mail clients we attempted to use. Everything from Outlook Express/Microsoft Mail to Thunderbird were supported and detected.

The backup utility has several features associated with it that make it extremely useful. As well as including local backup functionality, Bullguard provides the option to store information on their servers. They also allow you to view your remote backups using Windows Explorer in order to make viewing, moving, and deleting files easier. Secure transfer and worldwide access makes this utility even more useful.

The one place Bullguard lacks in extras is parental controls. The addition of solid parental controls would help push this product to the forefront of the Internet security market.

Ease of Use:

Bullguard Internet Security is one of the easiest, yet powerful programs we have used to date. The main screen is easy to navigate and has well labeled options so that you don't have to search for what you are looking for. Scanning options for Bullguard are easy to understand and the locations to start them make sense. Logging options are available for each scan type as well so that you can see what was caught and what was done for each problem.

Ease of Installation/Setup:

The setup for Bullguard Internet Security was easy and straight forward. It required a single reboot and some initial configuration steps as well. The configuration is run by a wizard that makes the initial configuration steps easy to perform and understand.

Help/Support:

The help and support options that are included with Bullguard Internet Security are extremely useful. Included in their support options are a forum, FAQ as well as live chat and email support that are both available within the program and from the support website. The only thing they are missing is phone support in the list of standard support options. With how well this program is set up though, there shouldn't be much of a need for it.

Summary:

Bullguard Internet Security is an elite product in the Internet security market. It has offerings that outpace most of the other suites on the market as well as offering a backup utility that places it far ahead of suites that don't offer backup capabilities. Bullguard also offers advanced antivirus as well as advanced antispyware integrated into a single scanner to save time during scans. With these advanced features, Bullguard has released a product that is moving quickly to the head of the Internet security pack.

ChoiceMail One 4

ChoiceMail One by DigiPortal is an anti-spam program that puts spam control in your hands. Instead of using the traditional spam filtering tools, ChoiceMail One assumes everything is spam until you grant permission to let it through.

Feature Set:

With ChoiceMail One 3.0 you can accept and reject emails by domain, IP address, or block email from known spam senders. ChoiceMail One will also approve email senders automatically once they respond to a challenge email sent to them by the program. You can import an existing address book to your approved list and approve emails by sender or by domain.

Ease of Use:

ChoiceMail One is easy to use once you set it up properly. If you choose the standard POP3 settings, you'll have no trouble. But for those with Webmail addresses, getting the program to work properly may be difficult. We tried to set up ChoiceMail One solely for an MSN email account. Though we followed the instructions exactly, ChoiceMail One kept flashing: "Disabled." We feel ChoiceMail One may be too difficult for the average Webmail user to set up.

Ease of Installation:

ChoiceMail One's installation process takes longer than other spam-filtering programs. And we experienced a slight uninstall glitch-when we tried to uninstall the program, we received this error: "Wise Uninstall Could not open INSTALL.LOG file." We had no trouble installing and uninstalling on our second try.

Again, we were unsuccessful setting up ChoiceMail One Webmail account.

Stability:

We had some difficulty while running ChoiceMail One. Occasionally, we could not minimize or close the program using shortcuts (such as the "_" minimize and "X" close buttons). Instead, we had to right-click the taskbar and choose "Close" to exit. Other than this, the program operated well.

Customization:

ChoiceMail One has some built-in rules and allows you to create your own rules as well. You can test new rules, too. You can customize rules based on just about anything, from the content of the "From" field to the length of the message.

Spam Filtering:

ChoiceMail One blocks 100% of spam, but does so by placing the burden of proof on any senders you don't have on your white list. While convenient for you, this is a burden that some email senders will be unwilling or unable to bear.

The sender must complete a short verification response within four days or ChoiceMail One will delete the sender's email. This is a problem for those who want to receive emails from unfamiliar addresses-such as software registration data, newsletters, or even email from associates who won't respond to the verification requirement.

Summary:

While using ChoiceMail One you'll probably stop more than spam-you may lose valued email as well. ChoiceMail One does an excellent job controlling spam using a permission-based method, an exceptionally accurate spam deterrent. For those who demand a spotlessly clean inbox, ChoiceMail One is the perfect remedy.
