Kaspersky Internet Security is an all-in-one tool that will help you keep your computer safe while surfing the Internet. It provides features such as a virus scanner, firewall, pop-up blocker, email scanner, the ability to protect your computer registry and more.

Beyond all of its features, it is very easy to use and comes in a configuration that will keep you safe without any additional adjustments from you. It also has the benefit of not slowing down your computer much when it scans. Many suites will bog your system down. We didn't notice a significant slowdown with Kaspersky Internet Security.

Firewall:

The firewall included with Kaspersky Internet Security is powerful, yet easy to use. It is configurable down to filtering specific ports and data types. All of our attacks were stopped including several from the test machine to other machines on the network.

Antivirus:

Kaspersky has been known for their antivirus solutions since the late 1990's. Their antivirus solutions are so efficient and effective that more than 120 companies are licensed to use the Kaspersky solution in other products. This simply means that the Kaspersky virus scanning engine is used in many other virus scanning systems throughout the world. Several certifications also help make this program one of the most solid and best known products in the market.

Kaspersky Internet Security is no exception to the rule they have created and enforced. It performs as well or better than any of its competition. Kaspersky found every virus we threw at it, including ones we compiled locally on our test machine. In many cases, the scanner picked up the virus even before we compiled it.

Kaspersky's real time scanner didn't slow down our system noticeably while performing large transfers or file saves. It also didn't cause any significant slowdowns when opening programs or booting up.

Antispyware:

Kaspersky Internet Security includes a good suite of antispyware tools. It blocked about 85% of popups we tested, as well as removed several nasty spyware installations. Kaspersky also disables links to known malware sites, and takes a proactive approach by scanning your operating system for vulnerabilities.

Other Security/Features:

Kaspersky Internet Security has several features that are not included in many of the other Internet security suites. A rootkit scanner is included and offered as a separate scan or as part of the full scan. Rootkits are programs, or combinations of programs, that take control of a computer without the owner's permission. Kaspersky Internet Security will detect and remove these programs even after they have taken control of your computer in many cases.

Kaspersky’s parental controls feature three different levels of access that can be customized and allows the user to set time restrictions in the setup screen.

Kaspersky Internet Security also has several unique tools to help protect your identity. A virtual keyboard allows for safe login and password entry. They also prevent identity theft with a secure socket layer.

Kaspersky also includes reporting features that many other Internet security suites exclude. Reports are available to show you when tests were run, what was detected and what types of issues were detected. There are also options to drill down within the reports to get more information on certain events.

Ease of Use:

Kaspersky Internet Security is easy to use and easy to configure. It offers an intuitive menu screen as well as having well organized sub-menus. The scan options are split up into categories that make sense, so finding the correct one shouldn't be difficult. Kaspersky Internet Security also allows you to perform other configuration changes while certain scans are running. This simply means that while running a scan, your computer is still functional and not just a glorified paperweight waiting for your scan to finish.

Ease of Installation/Setup:

Installation of Kaspersky Internet Security is a snap. The installation program is well thought out and walks you through everything you need to do to configure the software. After a quick reboot at the end of the installation, you are protected.

Help/Support:

Kaspersky offers several options for support. You have the choice to contact Kaspersky by phone or email, or if you would like to look to other users of Kaspersky Internet Security for support, there is an active forum provided that is updated with all the current information needed to use the program to its fullest capacity.

Summary:
Kaspersky Internet Security is one of the best Internet Security Suites available. Its high virus detection rates and easy to use interface make it a great addition to any computer. It also provides a very small footprint on your computer, which makes it easy to install and requires little attention. The inclusion of parental controls make it a very good match for family PCs as well. All in all, Kaspersky Internet Security is a quality product that will make your Internet life much safer

ZoneAlarm Internet Security

Firewall:

ZoneAlarm Firewall has been the standard for personal firewall products since early this decade. They continued this rich tradition and made it even better with ZoneAlarm Internet Security 2008. Their configuration utility is easy to use and has a learning feature that takes the guess work out of configuring your firewall.

During our testing, the ZoneAlarm firewall caught everything we threw at it including blocking some port scans that were designed to detect and attack stealthed ports. Impressive doesn't begin to describe the ZoneAlarm firewall when compared against many of the other firewalls in the security suite roundup.

Antivirus:

Until recently, ZoneAlarm was using an older version of CA's antivirus engine. Included in the new release however, ZoneAlarm includes the Kaspersky antivirus scanning engine. This is a significant upgrade and propels ZoneAlarm into the forefront of security suite technologies. With fast scan times, integrated spyware protection and a host of other features, ZoneAlarm Internet Security 2008 has become one of the applications to beat in the Internet security suite market.

Antispyware:

ZoneAlarm Internet Security 2008 includes a host of antispyware features including the OSFirewall feature and a deep scanner included in the virus scanner. OSFirewall is a feature that detects and destroys spyware while it tries to install itself. This covers everything from trojan horses to rootkits and offers an extra level of security that many other suites don't have.

Other Security/Features:

ZoneAlarm Internet Security 2008 has many extra features including powerful parental controls and the myVAULT feature to keep your password and financial data safe. Along with all of these, ZoneAlarm includes IM security that works with all the major IM clients such as MSN Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger as well as some of the more obscure clients like Pidgin and Miranda IM.

ZoneAlarm Internet Security also includes popup blockers, ad blockers and flash ad blockers to help streamline your Internet browsing experience. This is also useful when there are children using the Internet that may not know exactly what they are clicking all the time.

Ease of Use:

ZoneAlarm Internet Security 2008 is easy to use and requires almost no intervention to get protected and stay protected. The configuration wizard that runs during installation is easy to understand and doesn't require much time to complete. The menus within the program are well labeled and easy to navigate.

Ease of Installation/Setup:

ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite has an easy and intuitive installer than walks you through everything from installing the program to the initial configuration.

Help/Support:

ZoneAlarm Internet Security has great support documentation included with it as well as being available online. User forums are also available along with email support. They have a walk through help feature they call Instant Help that is also usefull. Phone support is offered for a pretty large fee, but their online help is more than sufficient for most problems you may have. We do feel that offering more support options would increase the value of this product and lowering or even removing the cost of phone support would make this product the best available on the market.

Summary:

ZoneAlarm Internet Security is one of the most well rounded and effective security suites on the market. Using the award winning ZoneAlarm firewall and including the Kaspersky virus scanning engine, great parental control features and anti spyware features that are among the best in the industry, ZoneAlarm hits an all time high.

BitDefender Internet Security

BitDefender Internet Security 2009 performs well at protecting your PC against viruses, spyware and other web threats that can infiltrate your computer. BitDefender is easy to use for the novice when run on the default configuration, but it can sometimes be difficult to configure when it comes to any advanced functionality or custom configurations.

Firewall:

West Coast Labs (W.C.L.), a leading software testing and certification organization, certifies BitDefender’s Firewall. BitDefender continually monitors all incoming and outgoing data. Within the settings dialog, the firewall tab contains five configuration and informational tabs to help with configuration: Status, Traffic, Advanced, Activity and Zones. The status tab includes a real-time graph so you can visually see your computer’s communication with the Internet. It also features a sliding bar to help with quick changes to the security level of your computer.

The slider bar configuration has three choices: Ask, Allow Recommended and Game Mode. These all use a "White List" system BitDefender uses to identify acceptable programs. We did notice that there were several popular programs, such as FireFox and Thunderbird, that were not listed which we were prompted about. Because you have the choice to accept or deny these programs, this isn't a large issue.

Antivirus:

Virus Detection is what makes BitDefender Internet Security 2009 shine. Its virus scanner is fast, accurate and adaptable. While testing the software, it detected every virus we threw at it including viruses embedded within compressed installer files.

Virus Bulletin rated BitDefender a VB100%, the highest honor for antivirus software. The VB 100% logo is awarded to antivirus products that detect all current "in the wild" viruses during both on-demand and on-access scanning in Virus Bulletin’s comparative tests. To put it simply, BitDefender’s AntiVirus capabilities are at the top of the pack!

Additionally, BitDefender passed the ICSA 2007 - a test that certifies that the software can detect viruses, prevent virus replication, and doesn’t generate false positives.

One of the best developments in the BitDefender antivirus program is the program’s ability to track when each file has been used last. When you perform a search, BitDefender will only scan the files that have been used or altered since the last time they were scanned. This has significantly improved scan times, which is something BitDefender struggled with in past versions.

Antispyware:

BitDefender will stop all major threats including adware, keyloggers, trojans and browser hijackers to keep your private information safe. There is no need for configuration because BitDefender will perform all antispyware functions automatically.

Other Security/Features:

BitDefender Internet Security 2009 comes complete with customizable web filters as part of the parental control function. You can set up user accounts and set specific criteria for the web filter per account. This will keep children away from potentially dangerous sites, PC-damaging downloads or material you would rather they not access. Additionally, this software will scan email messages for keywords ensuring your kids aren’t receiving harmful emails.

You can also set each account so the user can only access certain applications and use the computer during set hours of the day.

Ease of Use:

BitDefender Internet Security 2009 has several features to help keep the software easy to use while still providing good protection from threats. There is a "Quick Tasks" section to the status screen that has some common scanning options directly available with a single click. The default configuration is also a high point for the software. It limits the need for most users to perform any advanced configuration changes.

The addition of a program status screen helps to keep track of everything within all of the program segments and assists with launching common tasks. The problem is that it is just a monitoring screen for only a couple of functions in the program. There is very little other functionality or information displayed within the status screen. This creates a situation where finding and changing options is a chore that requires navigating sub-menus within the settings dialog. Even when you are in the settings dialog, it seems convoluted and sometimes messy within some of the sections.

The other issue is the significant slowdown of your computer this software can cause while it performs certain functions. Things such as moving large files can drop to a snail’s pace while the real-time scanner checks the file. While this is to be expected with all real-time virus scanners, BitDefender has significantly decreased the scan times for standard system scans. Recent versions have become much better at quicker searches and taking fewer resources than previous versions. Loading some of the sub screens within the software is slow at times, however.

Ease of Installation/Setup:

There were no problems with the installation of BitDefender. It comes with a configuration that will be acceptable to most computer users.

Help/Support:

Softwin provides tutorials, user manuals, and on their website, FAQs. You can find a lot of valuable information here and these resources will answer most of your questions. For further questions, you can contact customer support by phone, email or online chat.

Previously, calling customer support by phone meant hefty long-distance charges for calling Europe, but Softwin has set up a free phone support line. Now you can get faster technical support without worrying how much the call will cost you.

Summary:

BitDefender Internet Security 2009 is a great product. It has one of the best virus scanners available and offers antispyware and antispam features that are solid. The parental controls are quite useful if you separate users into different accounts.

However, it does suffer from some minor issues with ease of use. The ease of use issues could be made better by changing the user interface on the status screen and adding more information and functionality. BitDefender also suffers from significant computer slowdowns when transfering large files. This won't cause problems for most users though.

Overall, BitDefender Internet Security 2009 is a solid product that will keep your computer clean and secure.
